Joan Reynolds’ 20-plus year tenure as leader of this group has made her a noteworthy figure among women in early jazz in Chicago and beyond. More important, her band plays classic ragtime and historic jazz fare with verve and scholarship. They consistently respect the conventions of music conceived nearly a century ago. Their repertoire includes many colorful and seldom heard tunes played in classic ragtime orchestral style, with perhaps a touch of Turk Murphy. The tempos chosen by Reynolds and company avoid the hurried pace that often characterizes modern versions of vintage ragtime. Red Rose takes a generally leisurely pace to allow every melodic strand and rhythmic detail to be heard and savored. Joan co -founded the RRRB with Mike Schwimmer in 1981. Over the succeeding years, she has given numerous performances as a solo ragtime pianist and appeared with various jazz groups including the Chicago Footwarmers, Riverboat Ramblers, and her Joan Reynolds Quartet in addition to Performing on the St. Louis Goldenrod Showboat, at the Ragtime Festival of the Classic Rag Society of Indianapolis, and at the Sedalia Ragtime Fest with the RRRB. Trumpet: Art Davis is a professor of Music in Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University and one of the most accomplished jazz trumpeters in Chicago. As a charter member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra (formerly Jazz Members' Big Band), he has appeared with Joe Williams, Kurt Elling, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, and Jimmy Heath, among others. He is currently performing around Chicago with Petra’s Recession Seven and several other groups. Art Davis appears on many recordings. He has also performed with such notables as Maynard Ferguson, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Natalie Cole, Diane Shur, Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis, jr., Tony Bennett, and Michael Feinstein. Clarinet: Kim Cusack is a veteran player in demand all over the Chicago area. A member of the Salty Dogs J.B. since 1959, Kim has played all over the country with outstanding traditional jazz bands. He has been a member of Jim Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band for over 20 years and appeared with the band on “A Prairie Home Companion” radio show. He had a long association with Gene Mayl’s Dixieland Rhythm Kings and Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band and toured as featured saxophone tenor sax player with the Jan Garber Orchestra. Kim has appeared on over forty LPs and CDs. Trombone: Tom Bartlett is best known for his West coast Turk Murphy style, but plays any style of traditional jazz equally well. Tom is a charter member of the Red Rose Ragtime Band and a longtime member of the Salty Dogs Jazz Band. Always in demand to play with jazz bands on the festival circuit, he has played and recorded with many other bands over the years, including the Yerba Buena Stompers, Varsity Ramblers, South Frisco J.B., and Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band. He teaches bilingual 4th grade in Waukegan’s Glen Flora School and is a fine graphic artist who has designed covers for many of the albums he has recorded, including four covers for the RRRB. Banjo/Guitar: Jack Meilahn is a veteran player in the Chicago area who has recorded and played with many jazz groups throughout the U.S. including Chicago Rhythm, Down Home Jazz Band, Varsity Ramblers, and the Hotel Edison Roof Garden Orchestra and recently the Jazz O”Maniacs of Hamburg, Germany. Jack also finds time to play French horn in several wind ensembles. Tuba: Steve Ley, a retired attorney, has recorded with and been a member of The Elite Syncopators, a four-piece ragtime ensemble from Indianapolis, whose appearances have included the Sedalia Ragtime Festival and the Indianapolis Classic Ragtime Society Festival. He has played with many bands throughout the Midwest including the St. Louis Ragtimers, Waldo’s Gutbucket Syncopators, and Village Tavern Jazz Band. Drums: Wayne Jones, a member of the Salty Dogs Jazz Band since 1960, is one of the oldest active traditional jazz drummers. Wayne has played and recorded with many traditional groups including Waldo’s Gutbucket Syncopators, Ernie Carson j. B., Bob Schulz’s Frisco jazz Band, West End J. B., and the Sons of Bix. He played with Turk Murphy in Carnegie Hall in the tribute to The Turk Murphy Jazz Band, 1987. He also works regularly with Jim Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band. |
